It looks like the old fashioned Rosa Mundi which has been around since the late 1500s and is perfumed but onlyhas the one flush of flowers. If yours repeats it may well be rosa Ferdinand Pichard https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/details?plantid=1680 which can be trained as a climber.

Thank you obelixx. I think it's the latter as it has been planted against the fence and does flower again if rather weakly. It was very poor my first summer here and has been planted under membrane and a hugely thick layer of stones so it's been hard to feed etc. It's looking much better now so maybe the repeat flowering will be better
It's certainly looking healthy this year. If you cut the dead flowers as soon as they go over and can give it a weekly liquid feed of tomato food that will help with general health and repeat flowering. Do not feed after the end of June tho as new growth will be too sappy to harden off before winter frosts. Other than that it should be fine with a generous dollop of slow release rose fertiliser next March.

Thank you for the advice. I like it a lot so would love it to thrive
Good luck. I like it too. It's on my "to buy" list.
