Lilies

My garden lilies have not done very well this year. I have been told that they seem to have been attacked by the lily beetle. How do I deal with this problem.

How sad!  I sprayed mine with Provado Ultimate Bug Killer when the shoots were about 12 inches high the do it about every 6 weeks.  The buds are all forming well.  There are some holes in the leaves indicating that they have had a go at the plants though.  I never find any lily beetles either, although I do look every time I walk past which is several times a day.  I suggest you spray them now and again later to help protect the bulbs for next year. Good luck for next year.  Mags

I prefer to hunt the little beasts down, more fun.

Tha k you very much staffs ages and Dave Morgan. I did find one red beetle no spots never found any more They have really made a mess of the lillies great holes in most of the buds. I do not use pesticides as I have a dog who loves the garden so I am very careful what I use in the garden. I think I will get rid of the ones I have and start again next year when I will be more aware of the lily beetle.

Benita - I rarely get lily beetles here but slugs will also damage lily buds when they're having a chew at the emerging clematis buds so keep a look out for those too image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
