problem with apple tree

Where the apple tree was pruned either last year or year before on the cut on the branch there is a white woolly looking stuff on them quite thick. The tree had a lot of blossom on and now has a lot of apples formed on the branches that weren,t  cut. Will the apples be safe to eat when ready,I noticed it on there when we had a lot of rain.Should I treat it with something if so what do I do or is the tree now deceased, We have had the tree in 1990 it is an espalierI am new to gardening my husband always looked after it.

Almost certainly wooley aphid.  All you need to do is rub it off using a stiff brush (eg a nail brush.)  The apples will be fine. image

Keep an eye out for families of Long-tailed tits in your apple tree - they just love eating wooly aphids image
