Moving peonies

How soon after flowers fade is it safe to move peonies?

Most people would wait till the plant's dormant Lulu - ie autumn - but if the weather's damp, you prepare the new site thoroughly and keep it watered till established, you could move it before then. Cutting back any foliage by half will help with moisture loss. I moved one last summer with no ill effect, but you have to be vigilant if it's very hot and dry  image

Should wait until the winter when dormant, but they won't flower the next year

Flowering the next year depends how much you upset them Logan. Shift them in winter with a large enough root ball and they won't noticeimage

  • Is it ok to cut back the foliage? They are obscuring other plants in the border

I never cut the foliage back on mine, but I do deadhead the flowers. It might be unwise to defoliate at this stage as the leaves will still be green and nutrients will still be going down into the plant...

    1. Hello I have successfully move one , did it in Autumn because ground here is likely to be frozen in winter so it depends on where you are , I did give it a trim after moving , best of luck image
