Black glossy fly with orange at the base of the wings?

Hi,

I saw a fly sunbathing on one of my trees and wish I took a picture but didn't.

It was very black and glossy with orange at the base of its wings. I didn't dare touch it because I actullay wondered if it was possibly a type of bee because it was much larger and more round than your average fly.

I've had a google but no luck. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

I have looked at carpenter bees btw but the orange was literally just two small circles at the base of the wings and the rest was jet black.
