SLUUUUGS?!

...and snails.

They're getting into my plastic greenhouse and are feasting on the lower cucumber leaves! Thankful they don't like tomatoes which are my main crop but still!

I don't really want to use pellets, is putting cups 1/2 full of beer for them to drown in an effective method or would I be wasting my time haha.

Another idea I had was a ring of salt around each pot (on the ground)...

He Joe, I found they eat cat biscuits! Maybe if you put a few on the ground outside your greenhouse they may not be tempted inside!?

I have a plastic greenhouse also and due to high winds I dug an eight inch deep pit to put the metal poles of the greenhouse in then back filled it once the cover was on. This meant there was no gap at all! I weight the zip door entrance with old radiator bricks, so far no unwanted guests. image

Don't use. Salt it does harm to soil. Try crushed eggshells instead

ah didn't think of that wonky haha, when we had those terribly strong winds here I just put bricks inside on the frame and secured it to the fence it's next to.

We do have cats so I could try that actually.

Elviira that shouldn't be problem the area where the greenhouse is doesn't have any soil directly around it and everything is grown in pots inside it, so it's concrete slabs on the floor.

I was even thinking of buying some toads and having them live in there haha!

Hi  I do battle with Slugs abd snails every year and this year finally I am winnig..

I grow a lot of veg in vomtainers and found that the slug n' snails like to hide under the rims.. But the best discovery was Copper foil tape.. It is in rolls and it self adhesive so you roll it around the base of the tubs/ pots a couple of inches from the bottom. Make sure it encircled the tubs completely..    These hungry Gastropods exude a slime and they cannot slither over the copper tape as it gives them an electrostatic charge..hehe and so they won't cross it...

I also tried facing my pots with soft and after planting as a control.. The copper was 100% effective and if you look the copper tape can be bought in Pound shops....

Yay all runner bean plant safe at last..

the leopard slugs the big ones with spots and stripes only eat dead leaves etc but most importantly eat other slugs, the ones that do eat your plants. I didn't realise this until reading up on different types and used to put them in the brown bin but now i know i just leave them to get rid of the other slugs and nature seems to be working well image

  • That is useful to know.

Regarding salt, I used to use the pourer spout but I find using the sprinkler spout is just as effective, makes the salt pot last ages but very little goes on the ground so minimal salt contamination.

I had to laugh reading this it sounds as if your keeping evil spirits away with sait, I was told to put builders sand around the area by an old gardener.... but I have tried egg shells my self and it does help a little, other than that get a frog hehe they love them

  • Try product called Feed and Protect, it's on Amazon and eBay i think.

Worked for me and is pet safe if you are worried about your cats
