  • Hi Verdun, they were sent earlier as plugs and I potted them up till about a month ago. The weather seemed warm enough to plant out. They have two large leaves now.  Probably, better grow on and remove any flowers this year, pot in autumn for the greenhouse.  They seem a lot of trouble hope they are worth it as I only want orange or red.

  • Ok,will do

    many thanks

  • PS forgot to ask which, soil they prefer to be potted back into. I only wish that these new Gerbera garvillia were twice as tall as I can grow and get basal cuttings frm easily, and what a stunning flower head.

Valerie, there are some good orange Geums and Potentilla 'William Rollinson' is lovely. And there are some fine Hemerocallis in that colour range. Instead of buying orange/red echinacea each year, you could experiment with annuals from seed like Arctosis 'Flame', Calendula, Californian Poppy etc.

Your 'hot' colour scheme sounds absolutely great, please post some pics soon!

  • You know Guys, I love plants and would be able to fill an acre if I had one. My small plot at the front of the bungalow Is for flowers everywhere else is foR fruit and veg. it is a tussle but food is for real and flowers for the heart, but I can cope with some more and they all sound great, so it's geums etc crammed in with some good ground around them even the Gerbera will find a place. Must look up arctosis flame now!

    thanks

I adore echinaceas, Verdun, I was just offering some alternatives to the deep red/orange varieties, which look like they're a bit tricky!
