What's wrong with these gooseberries

Hello - can someone tell me whats wrong with my gooseberries.  Having moved into this house last year I found this gooseberry bush hidden underneath a load of stinging nettles.  I uncovered it in the early spring - all seemed well enough and the bush looked healthy however the berries have all got scabs on them and some have burst open.  Has anyone idea what the problem is and if I can treat it?

It looks a bit like mildew after the early stages- as if the furry stuff has come off and left the scabby stuff behind. Not a very clear explanation but someone with better knowledge will be along soon!

It's not mildew it's a scab of some sort should be all right to eat, the splitting is from uneven watering of a lot of rain
