yes its the same as used in driveways, but done with a bit more care and time you can avoid seeing them. also i find getting them level is easier than pavers.  I've just planted a whole one up with irish moss and set it on top of a manhole cover, looks way better than bright steel

they're quite nice. hogweed. thank you! Maybe I should also look into more but smaller ones, like here but closer together, as the garden is rather small: http://www.diyadvice.com/diy/patios-walls/patio/stepping-stone-path/

I assume it's best to use small gravel with the plastic squares, cathy?

Two old bricks together slightly offset would make a good stepping stone , repeated at stride length ,but not in a straight Line!

Shingle nice, especially for a cottage, sleepers are expensive, and really big, and very HEAVY  we had them in our last garden, which sloped, made a different level up to a shingle patio, garden before that, Hubby made a path from second hand bricks all curving, looked nice.  stepping stones? set level with the lawn.

sorry, just back didn't get notified! Yes Superhero small stones but not tiny, really anything that fits in, I used pea shingle in one are and small blue slate in another to create different effects. I borrowed a couple of handfuls from different friends and tried filling a quarter square to see which I liked. I enjoyed this solution as I change my mind iin a few years and just take out the stones and relpace with something else(soil and grass?) without major hard workimage

Hope you find something that works for you and familyimage
