Osteospermum

Hi there everyone. I planted some Osteospermum about a month back and it's the first time I have ever grown them and was wondering do they self seed? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No they don't not in my experience anyway but you can easy take cuttings as most aren't fully hardy and will probably not survive the winter although mine did this year.

  • Okay thankyou never taken cuttings from them either tbh :/ which type of cuttings do you take? Stem cuttings or another type and when is best to do it?
  • The ones I have are the mixed ones from T&M they are purple and white ones. Which is the best method of propergation do you think? Layering or cuttings?

They do set seed, whether they grow by themselves in the garden that I dont know, but I collected the seeds off my  ice/ blue one last year and have dozens of them now, they all germinated very quickly, thats not to say they will  be true to colour though. I will wait and see.

Verdun, I have found the original seeds, they are called Osteospermum Ecklonis 'Sky and Ice' they were gorgeous last year, white on the top, blue underneath, I hope the seeds will come true, they may well do this year but I think its pushing it a bit to collect again.

  • If I take cuttings, will they be ok in an unheated greenhouse over the winter?

  • So can I do this from the bedding osteospermums that I bought this year?
