What's on my hydrangea?

Hi all, please help me identify a pest on my hydrangea. It's on the underside of the leaves as well as on the stems. Never had it before, these plants are about 10 years old. They don't look healthy, although there are plenty of flowers this year. The leaf growth is severely stunted in comparison to past years. I'm worried about other plants in its vicinity - what is this, what do I do to get rid of it, and will it effect other plants in my garden? Thanks!

Sorry folks, can't upload a picture. Soft white fungus type spots the size of match heads with a brown 'open' end on some of them. Hopefully someone recognises that inadequate description!!

Sounds like... ahem, in italian cocciniglia... I think in english would be scale insects?

If you squish the things, do you get a smear of something that looks a bit like blood?

Thanks! The pics helped Edd, it's hydrangea scale. Now off to read about how to treat it ... if I can. The two 'infected' plants might have to come out image
