Diseases That kill Plants

I have 5 Emerald & Gaiety sited aginst a North East house wall and after many years of them being healthy and climbing they have all died with what looks like a hard canker.  The canker is ball shaped and of varying size, some being the size of Tenis balls. The canker seems to be around the stems at the base of the plants. Does anyone know what this is, and whether after rmoving the plants it would be safe to replant either more Euonymus or other plants.

Thanks

Euonymus get something called crown gall. You could google that and see if it looks right. I haven't experienced this myself so only a suggestion, not an answer.
