Keirra Japonica

iceice Posts: 332
My neighbour has kerria Japonica. However its creeping under the fence and poking up under plants and making others in happy. Anything I can do? I presume weedkiller would harm my neighbours plant. Any ideas

cut the flowering stems down to the ground after it flowers each year and just enjoy a freebie.

Its clearly runners. Unfortunately its pushing up my roses which I moved over winter and pansy's. Hmmm will have to have a think. I like my neighbours just not the bits poking under the fence (they have some nice weeds too)

Kerria have runner like roots which spread just below the surface: you can just follow the stems down and dig out the clump of roots before they get established if you like.

It's a great plant though for the back of a border as it's flowers profusely in spring. A chap down the road from me has even made a low growing hedge out of it.

How about digging it out and moving it somewhere else in your garden?

Agree with Tetley, talk it over with them first, they may want to get rid of it anyway. If not, try a root barrier, min 60cm deep and extending at least 1.5m beyond the clump on either side. Use thick black plastic, preferably butyl or heavy duty PVC. Install right under the fence line and fold the top of it back over the top of the soil towards your neighbour's side, held down by bricks/stones.

I can't see them wanting rid its a huge clump I don't really mind it its just the runners unplanting my roses and pansy's. Hmm might try a teeny bit of spot weedkiller. I keep pulling up runners not even sure all connect back to parent

If you are going to weedkiller it, make sure you sever all the roots which come under the fence first. This is important because if you kill your neighbour's plant he may not be best pleased.
