carrots and beets dying?

Hi there, I am new to vegetable gardening, I built 2 raised beds and have had great success with my Lettuce, Scallions, Cabbage and Potatoes. I was not aware that i needed to thin out my Carrots and beets. I planted these at the end of April start of May. I noticed that both were bulging and decided to lift and part them and replant them, but both look like there dying / wilting. The leafy stems are drooping and don't look like there are going to spring back to life, is there anything I can do, All help will be appreciated

Unfortunately, carrots cannot be lifted and replanted successfully.  To thin them out you need to remove some while leaving the rest in place. You can use the thinnings in salads.  However, beetroot might re-grow after transplanting but will wilt badly because of the root disturbance.  Water it every day until it perks up.  Provide some shading until then to prevent the sun from drying them out. image

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

carrots will be dead they cannot take any major disturbance, re-sow and you should hopefully beat the carrot root fly, beets should be ok, you just need to water a lot until they redevelop the fine root hairs that take in water.

  • Thank you so much for the advice, Bob and Tree hugger. I'm so enjoying the garden, learning loads online but also through my mistakes, but I learn quickly. Thanks so much
  • Thank you Verdon, this time next year I look forward to a great harvest.
