Dead lavender, strange stem = cod?
Hello,
Sorry, I can't be bothered to post a pic atm as it requires a lot of faffing so imagination required.
i have some lavender planted in 20cm x 90cm planters and it grew fine for a couple of years but this year half of the plants are mostly dead.
On the dead stems it looks like the bark has peeled back to reveal lots of dark brown "hairs". They are about 5mm long and 1mm thick. I thought they looks a little bit like the stem had tried putting down roots but the lack of soil/water made it a futile effort. I could scratch them off easily to reveal the smooth wood underneath and they felt like woody fibres.
Does this sound possible? What else could it be?
Ive noticed ants in the planter too, could they have killed the lavenders?
Thanks

Could be any number of things, Louise. Lavender becomes very "woody" - brown, dead-looking stems - as it gets older unless it is pruned properly. There can also be a tendency to overwater lavender in planters. Take the time to upload a photo and you'll get more helpful responses.
My lavender has been eaten by rosemary beetles, maybe worth looking at those as the culprit.
