rose buds

This pic is a David Austin rose Pilgrim I've had it for around 5years or more I know we purchased 4 to grow through our hedge unfortunately the rabbits had other ideas.

Each year I pruned back properly but last autumn I dug up the only remaining twig and potted it up.  I was chuffed when it looked like it was going to bloom.but the buds don't look right are they normal for an old rose or have I got a problem?

I would say that if you only rescued in the autumn its still trying to make decent roots, it cant do that and flower as well, i would cut all off the buds  and wait until next year to let it flower, by then it will have a good root system.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
