Green Chillies- Need Help
in Fruit & veg
I had planted several seeds of green chillies back in january. Now he plant is around 12inches high. It is nice and sturdy and i can see many small white flowers coming up on it.
But as i have not seen a chilly plant grow before can anybody suggest how will chilliy grow???
I asked people visit my house some said the white flower petals falls off while the bud of the flower still remains on the stem and from that bud itself chillies grows...is that the way green chillies grow..
So somebody please help me on that ....

Hi Tanmay and welcome
Your chillies sound as if they're doing well. This video will explain clearly about the flowers and pollination etc

I hope that helps

Yes, the petals fall off, and the chilli grows from the centre of the 'flower'.
Hello Tanmay,
Sounds like you are doing fine
You are quite right, the flowers form and are wind pollinated generally. When pollinated the petals will dry a little and fall off, leaving the tiny chilli on the plant.
Hotter breeds like Habenero, Scotch Bonnet ect will take longer to flower and for fruit to develop- From my experience harvest time for such chillies grown outside in the UK is late August at a minimum.
Smaller less hot chilli like apache, Basket of fire ect should be flowering about now if grown in a sheltered position. They will flower all season until September if looked after with a bit of TLC.
I have found using an old electric toothbrush held very gently on the edge of petals helps improve yield massively; You can actually see the dust cloud of pollen falling!! Works great on Tomatoes as well...Even if the neighbours do think you have gone crazy
Keep up the good work!
mine are only a few cm tall, but already have flower buds.( in a polytunnel, not outside)
