Cuttings

Can you take cuttings of anything just now? Like fushia, lavender, thyme anything really? Also root powder i cannot find any, went to my garden centre and they did not sell it, do i really need rooting powder or can i take a cutting and put it in a 3inch pot? I am loving this new hobby and i now want to play with cuttings while i wait on this June gap vanishing. image

Lavender thyme def yes as I have. Avoid flowering stems. Rooting powder helps but not vital. Took sage cuttings which rooted fine without. Experiment!
  • Ohhh happy days lol thank you.

ive got cuttings everywhere cristine007 (nowhere to plant them mind you) i use plastic bottles e.g coke, lemonade, squash bottles etc if you dont drink them ask neighbours for them from their recycle bins. if they have lids cut the bottom off and keep lid on, if lid is missing cut top off, then you can use these on your pots as mini greenhouses to create their moist atmosphere. try not to have the leaves touching the sides. leave just one or two small leaves at the top, if the leaves are big reduce them by half horizontally image

Hee hee. I'm always on the lookout. I popped to my local little Shop The other day, I took the alley way rather that the Street way and admired a beautiful clematis cascading down one of the rear garden fences. So Pretty. On my way back after shopping I nipped off a wee bit.

I Cant help myself . I'm currently using my spare room as my potting shed/Green house. Lol.

Also I have found that, if you notice a plant you like and the owner is in the garden, don't be shy. Tell them how much you like it, because we all love to get positive feedback and it almost always results in being offered a cutting so you can grow your own.

Rooting hormone is not always needed for cuttings taken now from soft green growth, but is recommended for semi-ripe cuttings taken later in the year.

    Wilkinsons sell it...

If you use hormone rooting powder, tip a little out of the bought container into something else and dip the end of your wet cutting into that so you don't spoil the rest.
