    sounds like scale insect

This time of year you can use a systemic insecticide if you wish or use a winter wash - in winter

If you're able, remove by hand.

I've got quite a big acer that had a bad infestation last summer. I used winter wash in december and I think it's worked.

Just google winter wash for trees and you'll get plenty of results. I used Vitax Winter Tree Wash. Only for use in the winter/dormant months.

think it works by covering the dormant insects in an oily film which kills them.
I mixed it up in a spray and gave the tree a good blast (also managed to cover myself in it too!). I don't think it contains nasty stuff, just an oily emulsion.
    I didn't suffer any effects.

If you need to act quicker, use a systemic spray designed for scale insects such as Westland Plant Rescue which you would only use when the plant/tree is growing.

    Good luck

No Marion, Winter Wash is a product that is i believe an emulsion designed to kill the insects.
You mix as per the instructions - I think it's 10-15ml in 1 gallon of water - it looks like milk, then spray the plant/tree. But only use in winter when the plant/tree and the insects are dormant.

This time of year use a systemic insceticide that controls scale insects - I gave examples in my previous post.

    Good luck
