My friend was given this plant as a bonsai. It has cream witch hazel like flowers and we think it is evergreen. No one at my bonsai club knows what it could be.It also seems to be relatively hardy but then we do live in the south.

Any ideas?

Looking at those flowers my best guess would be some form of witch hazel but as those usually produce flowers before the leaves appear, it probably isn't.

Edit: Looks like the Chinese forms do have flowers and leaves at the same time.  Look up Hamamelidaceae Loropetalum Chinense Shang-white (which is evergreen.)

The plant you suggest does look similar but the leaves on my friends plant are very glossy and shiny. It certainly does look like some sort of witch hazel though.

It's probably a Loropetalum Chinense but a chance seedling in which case it will be unique.  Serious Bonsai growers will select particular tree and shrub seedlings which are already dwarf in form as that effectively gets them half way there. image
