I agree with Bob, one of the Salvia's would be my best guess also, foliage is normally aromatic if a Salvia. They are very popular at the moment and there are many selections to choose from and many different colours. A lovely group of plants.
Thanks for suggestions everybody,I also thought it might be a salvia, but cannot find anything like it.I grew it from a cutting kept in a pot for 2years,planted out last autumn in sheltered south facing aspect,We are in Shropshire on clay soil it is growing well about 30 inches high. When the flowers first form they have a velvety appearance gradually opening out to lots of little flowers making up the complete flower,Hope this may help to id which salvia it is. if that is what it is,It takes me forever to get a photo to upload, don't know why i click on tree logo but still have trouble, I should add there is a very slight smell when leaf is rubbed hard,Not much though compared th other salvias
thanks Edd,just googled it,thats not the one,Mine is not like the normal flowers on a salvia,I have several blue salvias but they are totally different to this one if it is a salvia
I agree the flower is not like most Salvias but the general structure is the same. The calyx, part that surrounds the petals, looks very Salvia like to me. My money is still on a Salvia, all be it a not so common one perhaps. Have you crushed the leaves and are they aromatic?
I have tried crushing a leaf, not really an aroma from them though,i forgot about this plant over winter but i think it stayed evergreen, the flower stayed a tight furry shape looking blue/black for about 3weeks before opening up as in pic.each little floret looks like a penstomen shape flower but very small florets making the total flower about 2inches. Hope this may help,

Apologies what about now?
I don't immediately recognize that gg and nobody else has made a suggestion.
So how about a few clues
Is it a shrub? herbaceous perennial? Indoors or out? Where do you live?
A photo of the plant would be good as well (not just the flower)
In the sticks near Peterborough
From the leaf and flower shape I would say it is certainly some kind of Sage. Agree that a photo of the complete plant would help identify it further.
