Cherry Trees, Yellow Leaves, & Lime Chippings

In April I planted three 3yr old cherry trees. They took well with no obvious sign of distress.

Late May I spread Limestone Chippings around where they grow to a depth of about 2-3".

I had checked but I didn't see Cherry Trees listed as ericaceous. Now however, I am starting to see the leaves on the lowers branches nearest the trunk turn yellow. I assume this is more than just a coincidence?

As with all chippings there was some dust which I presume would leach into the soil relatively quickly. Thereafter I expect the limestone to impact the soil at a much slower rate.

My initial thinking is that the yellowing has been caused by the lime and that I should treat the areas around the root balls with something to counter the alkaline.

I would welcome any opinions because I am basing all this on assumptions.
