What's happened to my flowering currant

I bought my home 5 years ago and this flowering currant was in already in the garden. It has never let me down giving me a spectacular display very year until now. The bottom branches have leave and flowers but the top ones look miserable. There are red buds on the branches but nothing has happened. I'm quite upset about this has it's a lovely shrub. Can I save it? If not what can I replace it with?

do you have honey fungus? It can floor a mature shrub in no time. I lost a 15m tall contorted willow to it in my last garden.
I think that maybe the case, I havent had a proper look due the delouse we are having at the moment. It's next to a camellia I hope this won't be affected. I know it's silly to get upset about losing a shrub but it as. Not sure what I'm going to replace it with. Can I prevent this from happening again?
