Bubble under pond liner

We have a very large pond in our garden in which the liner has bubbled in part? Any ideas on what maybe causing this? Could it be air or water? We live on clay and the pond is some 3 feet deep in parts and is at least 20 feet by 10 feet in size. We have no idea how old the pond is as it was here before the people we bought from and that must be 12-14 years now. There are many fish in the pond.

If anyone has come across the same issue or has any ideas then please let us know.

I think I remember the new "lake" beside the new glasshouse at Wisley having the same problem. " Balooning" I think they called it. Due to water underneath the liner.

They had to drain it completely and start again. I guess it's not an option for you though.

Maybe someone will come along with an answer

    Hostafan1,

I took the plunge (almost literally) and got in to have a look and it was air. I managed to push the lining back to the edge where it must have dissipated as all is well right now.

We had a similar problem at a previous house. Huge pond ( about 60 x 40 feet) which had been there a long time and had large 'folds' in the liner- clay soil too. We had no chance of sorting it so just had to live with it.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

If it is water then it will 'relax' over time as the water drains away. How long have you noticed the bubble?

And has it been very wet with you lately?

  • I'm almost done digging & someone suggested installing Agi pipe (slotted drain pipe used for french drain)  in the bottom before installing liner.  Agi pipe comes out from under liner on side to route water out above pond water level.  Pressure of water in pond pushes any water/gases under liner through the Agi pipe to the surface.  Has any body heard and/or tried this?  -thx

This thread is two years old. Steve, I suggest you start a new question with your questions so you get varied responses.
