What do you carry you hand tools around in?

All my bits and bobs (labels, string etc) live in the greenhouse or the garage. If I need anything I go and fetch it, then return it.

Having come across as anally tidy and methodical, I will no doubt lose my trowel or secateurs tomorrow just to pay me back!......................

I use a caddy like this (below). I have had it for 40 years - I first used it to carry our baby's nappy-changing kit around the house, and that "baby" is now 40!

Me, personally I would never have anything so plasticky sitting around my garden, never ever. It would kill the atmosphere that makes my garden worth spending time in. Even if some of that time is spent running around looking for stuff.

Also while I know that my haphazard way of distributing tools around has an element of inefficiency, come see the garden I created from scratch in less than two years, and then we can talk about efficiency.

I'd hate to garden in a frame of mind of regimental discipline. It's not how I function.

I have learnt over the years, working with many different people, that some people are naturally tidy, (good for them) and some people are naturally scattered (ADD often plays a role), but that often the most scattered people are the most naturally creative and original. We are not unfocused, we just focus in a different way, and on different things.

I take this "flaw" of my personality with good humour, and I have my coping strategies which ovbviously work, so it does not bother me overmuch, unlike lectures on disciplineimageimage

Thanks everyone for your interesting stories and ideas. I  am currently trying out a tool caddy but like the look of the trugs. I have a habit of going out to do one job with one tool but before you know it the garden is full of tools from snippers to saws! image

I wear an old shooting vest with a multitude of pockets. When fully loaded with secateurs folding saw hand fork trowel gloves misc debris and keys it weighs a ton.

Perhaps I am anally retentive about my tools as I am a Virgo! However my sister who is a Virgo as well is the exact opposite. She always leaves her tools lying around, even gloves, and they get totally wasted in the rain. I have not got a straight line in my garden so it does not influence my style of garden. Perhaps I can blame it on my childhood when I did not have many toys and had to 'keep them good'!

  • I lose tools sometimes even when I carry them in a trug. I had a pair of Fiskars snips which completely disappeared for months and luckily just before replacing them I found them deep inside a large heather plant when trimming it earlier this year. Small pleasures!

I lost my Felco secateurs, and they turned up over a year later, in the compost heap. I cleaned them up and they still work OK.
