Other things you might want to consider, to start imagining your planting scheme:
Bold textures and pale colours stand out more than fine textures and dark colours. So a large block of fine-leaved, dark coloured plants like lavender, is easily balanced by a small block of a pale flowered plant (think of any of the zillion kinds of daisie for example: so cheerful and luminous), or a large leaved plant like Japanes anemones. By varying the size of the blocks based on the charachter of the plant, you can make the "string planting" of your narrow bed varied but still balanced.
Of course the smaller the plant the more you nedd to fill a block.
If the bed is very long, consider leaving a few blocks "free" for bedding out with summer things like petunias or pelargoniums, to be replaced with bulbs in winter.
The bed is an L-shape and probably about 1m on the shorter side by about 2m so it isn't that long. I will take your advice and plant the blocks but I don't think there would be enough room for the repeats...
Thank you so much for your help, it is much appreciated. I will let you know how it turns out!
