Talkback: 10 zinnias

I received a packet of Zinnia seeds with my Gardeners World Magazine. I planted them, but found the results very disappointing. They are now in a sunny border, but only about 7.5cms high. some have died. They look pathetic! Is there any hope of flowers?

I have started a cut flower garden this year.

I have been relying on zinnias, brought hundreds of seeds, as they were categorised as easy.

The results are most disconcerting , they have suffered die back very slow to get established, I have been blaming the cool days and cold nights as I know they are a sun loving plant. Very dissapointed.

The zinnias from my packet of free seeds are still very small as well. I don't know if they're just slow growers but I was so looking forward to them flowering. Can only hope that some warm weather spurs them on

  • Same here I thought it was something I had done however must be the seed quality
  • Same here! I thought it was me - nice to know others are experiencing same problems image

Mine are doing well - but its only in the last couple of weeks that they have really taken off - the cold nights kept holding them back.  Hopefully now the weather is getting better, others will have success tooimage

Only eight seeds germinated. The plants are about six inches high, and are currently being hardened off.

I thought the germination rate was very poor. If I'd paid for the seeds, I would have complained.

Someone sent me a packet of Zinnia Purple Prince on the seed swap thread, they were from a mag, could have been 'the other one' but they all germinated, the secret is to keep them in, they like warmth, dont put them out too soon, definitely not in the garden yet. mine are now back under cover as we are having really strong winds and driving rain. They have been potted on twice.  They do pick up in the summer, which isnt quite yet, this year anyway!

did you germinate them in the dark? i sowed my seeds and it said to germinate in the dark so i put a blanket over the plastic lid and had so many of them (too many to be honest) ive only planted about a dozen and given tones away.
