Hi WillDB, ive looked up a Beschorneria yuccoxides and you are right, that is what my plant is Thanks a lot.
I've had it for about three years just growing in a pot on the patio not doing much, then this year up popped this lovely pink stem, I have been reading different things about the plant so hopefully I can look after it now and for years to come, thanks again.
There was a big colony of it in concrete planters outside a Co-op in Worcester. I used to point it out to people when driving past (not that anyone was remotely interested). Aha, it's still there!

It's doing well, so it must be hardy (and probably drought tolerant) when established.
