Hi

I planted 18 Brussel Sprout plants in March they are growing really well  and about 4ft tall now. They are all starting to flower with yellow flowers at the top now, is this correct. I have never grown these before but it looks like they are going to seed. Any idea's

Yes, they are going to seed. They won't be any good.

I'm afraid they've 'bolted' and you won't get any sprouts form on them.  You could have another try - garden centres /nurseries might still have some late variety plants.  When you plant sprouts or cabbages the ground must be really firm before you put them in.  The best way to do this is to tread it down (even jump up and down on it - seriously).  Once you planted them, press them in firmly and every so often, firm them again as they grow.  Bolting occurs in young plants when the temperature drops below 50 degrees for long periods (they get stressed) or if the soil has not been compacted enough.  Don't give up but next time make sure you grow an F1 hybrid cultivar which is less prone to bolt.

  • Many thanks for all your help, first time I have grown them and failed in the compost tomorrow  that's the Brussels not me. Once again many thanks for all the advice
