Mulching in summer

Thanks all for you help and advice. As mentioned on my other post, I'm struggling somewhat with ground elder. I made a good fist of digging out as much ground elder as possible, pulling out the roots wherever possible. However, being that we are midway through June and my other plants are established, I could only do so much without causing serious damage. A few days ago I also applied a weed killer to certain areas effected by ground elder, so hopefully that will help some. Anyway. After a long morning weeding and watering I set about laying a wood bark mulch; i know people talk about leaf or mushroom mulch, but bark was all they had at the GC. I know this is not the right time of year to mulch, because the soil has lost moisture and because takes a while to break down and the plants are already

established but I am hoping I will still see some benefit. And be sure to do things a little differently next spring!

Don't worry about it MrM. It's just that spring is the ideal time for a mulch as it helps to preserve the moisture from the winter rains so that plants thrive in the long dry summer ...if we get one! It helps to keep weeds down, so spring is the best time because they're getting going with a vengeance at that time. It also looks good - dresses any bed or border and sets it up for the rest of the year.

I've only just started emptying my compost bin to use as a mulch on one of my borders. I weed as I go, although there aren't too many, and the mulch will feed my plants as well as keeping everything tidy. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
