Any ideas on these two plants?

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone knows what this plant is :

image

Found it in my friend's garden, she doesn't know what it is.  The leaves look like wisteria but a bit bigger and it has a flower panicle from this year, so early flowering (?) and some from previous years where it's never been pruned.  The tree was about 5 feet tall and wizened looking (very old?), it has one of these green 'shoots' at the end of each branch but nothing below at all.  I'm not sure how it should be pruned as I don't know what it is.

At the same time we found a plant about 4 feet high that had stems like green rhubarb but hairy and the leaves at the ends were more lobed/cut than rhubarb leaves.  No flower to help with identification.  Any thoughts anyone?  Many thanks

Looks like I'm off to the garden centre tomorrow then with the branch tip I cut offimage.  Will let you know what I find out.

The panicle looks like a lilac flower head, although the woody stem isn't typical of Lilac, the stems are usually smoother.

Could the second one possibly be a gunnera?

No idea what the one in the picture is though.

No not a gunnera, or if it is she has a problem as she had about 4 of the plants growing at the back of a small border.  Strangely another friend sowed 'wild flower' seeds from one of those pre-packed boxes you can buy and the same plant appeared.  Not what he was expecting as its now over 3 feet tall.

  • The plant in the picture reminds me of Nandina domestica

Re the 'rhubarb' - maybe one of the Rodgersias?

Hi all, I think you have it Chrissy, the lady at the garden centre also thinks it's Nandina domestica so I'll take a look in my books to double check.

With regards to the 'rhubarb' looking plant, I think I'll keep an eye on it and see if it flowers.  I checked the rodgersias but the thing I found wasn't anywhere near as 'tidy', it just looks like nothing at the moment.  Will watch and see.

    Many thanks to all.

It may well be ornamental rhubarb.  I have two forms and both have foliage more cut than my edible rhubarb and neither is ready to flower yet whereas the edible stuff has been trying for a couple of months.

    I think is is Nandina.

  • Is the first one a leggy Abelia?  Looks like it has been fighting for light!  Perhaps cut it back and give it some tlc.
