Bumblebees and leaf curl

I have a six year old apple tree which gets leaf curl every year, sometimes I prune off the parts that are diseased, sometimes I leave them. We always get enough apples from it anyway - so I don't bother treating it with anything.

What is curious is that bumblebees seem to be particularly drawn to the curled leaves, flying around the tree, lighting on the curled leaves and trying to find a way in. What are they up to?
