my clematis (different variety)had purple blotches on and was advised on here it might be clematis wilt and to cut off the affected leaves, which i have done and ive checked it since and there is no more of it

I find that sometimes older clematis leaves do become discoloured - I ignore it and none of them have come to any harm.  image

I find leaves go a bit purple when it's been very cold and we've certainly had some unseasonably cold nights lately.

However, the best advice for healthy clematis that grow and flower well and deal with problems themselves is to feed generously in spring with a slow release clematis feed.   In pots, where nutrients in the compost are all used up in the first season, it is advisable to give occasional liquid feeds of rose or tomato food which both encourage flowering.

For Nelly Moser and other group 2s, it is also advisable to remove spent flowers before they start forming a seed head as this too will encourage more flowers.

  • Our Clematis Comtesse de Bouchaud has just started flowering but the leaves near the bottom are all going browny purple and dying. I admit I forgot to feed it this Spring image... is it too late to feed now?

  • Hello

I don't know if anyone can answer this but the flowers on my nelly moser this year are all green - as green as the leaves. In previous years it has had large beautiful light mauve flowers but not this year. Could it be the unseasonal cold? I live in the south west where it is usually warmish now but the other morning I had ice on the puddles, which is extraordinary for late april. Many thanks for reading this.

They'll probably change colour as they open up and the weather warms up.

Mine has hardly started growing yet and certainly isn't big enough to produce flower buds yet - but then I do treat it as a group 3 and prune it hard in spring as winter kills off the top growth here.

  • I love green flowers Sue, hope mine does that!!

  • Imminent is doing exactly the same. I wondered if the colour had been washed away by all the rain earlier in the year. Should I be feeding it with something special?
