problem hedge
I have a hedge at the front of my property which is a bit like the Forth bridge. When you reach the end with your trimming it's time to start again at the beginning.
I'd like to find some way to inhibit the growth without killing it off. When it's well trimmed it looks beautiful, so I don't want to lose it, Any suggestions?

What plants does the hedge consist of?
Leylandii only.
Sorry, all I can suggest is a flamethrower...
I had 10m of the damned stuff and the garden is so much better without it.
Reduce the height to a more acceptable 2 metres and you will find it takes half the time to cut.
We do ours just once a year.
Chrissie,
How long is the hedge, how high is it and what shape is it currently cut in? Does it form a boundary with a road, footpath or a neighbour's garden? If a public road or path, is it encroaching on the width of that way at all - in other words, is it a nuisance to anyone even to the slightest extent? What is the diameter of the trunks at about a foot above the ground? Is the purpose of this hedge to give privacy?
Joe
I missed the bit on the thread title about the length and height
. However my other questions still stand.
Thanks to everyone for their responses.
To answer Joe, no, it causes no problem to anyone else as it actually stands on a private estate, and is totally on my property.
Does it need to be 4m high? The work in a hedge increases exponentially once you have to leave the ground to cut it (and particularly if it's wide across the top).
I was more startled by the four hundred metres part...
The title says 400m long and 4m high...
