A cutting form our Hawthorn tree?

DachaloverDachalover Posts: 776

Hi all , this is our first post on GW . We live in a dacha in the Russian countryside outside Moscow.

We planted a very small double pink flowering Hawthorn about 12 years ago . It has done very well given the notorious Russian climate. This is a photo of our favorite tree last weekend.

We would love to be able to take some cuttings to see if we can get another wonderful tree from them. Is this possible?

Also any advice of when and how to prune would be gratefully received.

Sadly Hawthorns do not generally grow from cuttings. You would need to graft a piece of the one you have onto a normal Hawthorn rootstock. I would think that the one you have is a grafted plant.

They do not normally need pruning, but if you do have to remove pieces then once the flowering is over is the best time.

You could of course grow them from seed obtained from the berries.

How can you lie there and think of England

Once again, the berries do not produce a tree like the parent. In fact in the last 20 years we have never actually seen any berries on our double flowered Haw. I have a feeling it is a sterile one.

Air layering only works on things which will produce roots from leaf buds on the stem. The procedure forces a shrub/tree to change those buds into root buds. Trees which do not have that ability will not root.
