could be,  Gardenmaiden. I had in mind the similar(ish) Telekia as a possibility

They don't smell of anything in particular, just a fusty leaf smell - sorry I'm not good at describing smells.

Take care with the ragwort - wear gloves if handling it.

I've never worn gloves to handle ragwort. I don't eat it thoughimage

Lack of smell rules out my telekia idea for the other one

I've handled ragwort regularly too and without gloves image

Handle it regularly too & will always wear gloves, arms covered etc. Don't wear a mask though as DEFRA also recommend!

I'll wear gloves thanks, I'm allergic to all sorts of plants.

Well folks, thanks very much for your help.  I'll get rid of the deceptively pretty ragwort (even the name is pretty).

As for the mystery plant - it does look like a weed, but I'll keep one to see if it flowers and I'll keep you all posted.  Thanks again.

This is growing just over my fence.  Is your mystery plant this?  I don't know what it is but I'm sure someone can tell me.
