Animal or pest ravaging my fruit trees?

The apple also has a soft white fluff on the bark. There's no oozing the bark is dry. Any ideas?

Could it be cats using them to sharpen their claws?  You could protect them using tree guards which work against cats, rabbits and deer.

By the way, that fluffy white stuff is woolley aphid and can be removed with a stiff brush.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

ah ok ill try the tree guard. That will be a relief if it is just a pesky cat. Funny though as its in a  walled garden and never spotted a cat during daylight. Must be sneaking in at night.
