Onion Fly

Hi all. Having grown quality onions for years without problems, this year my crop has been ruined by a bad infestation of onion fly. From past experience with both cabbage root fly and carrot fly I have to assume that this years crop is beyond salvage. What I would like to know is if there is anything I can do to prevent a reoccurence next year.

Charlie riggall it's the maggots that do the damage get rid of the onions next year

plant in a different place and cover with fleece to stop the flies from laying the eggs there's nothing else you can do
  • Charlie, I am a novice onion grower, they were doing really well, but over the last two days the leaves have become kind of droopy and tangled. Also, some of them have holes in the leaves, and I have spotted several white thrip type jumping around. Are these onion fly?

  • Thanks guys. Edd, I have used Nematodes successfully in the lawn. Do you think if I used them in the onion bed I could retain the bed next season as I have invested a lot of time, compost and muck in creating a really good onion bed.
