Disposal of large garden hedges

Hello,

I have just got round to sorting out my garden and have chopped down and chopped up 3 large hedges - What would be the cheapest  / best solution to get rid of these? Quotes from recycling waste people are approaching 1k, I have heard of people who come and chip the wood? Not sure who to go to for this and how much it would be? any other ideas?  I am based in Kent in the UK.Thanks!

You could hire a chipper and get someone to do it, or diy.

    for example

  • Thanks Jennifer, I heard these chippers struggle with greenery and need to be fed only Wood? Is that the case? as there are a lot of leaves etc on the hedges!

If you mean a shredder they do sometimes get blocked but if you put in a mix of leaves and stems it should be OK, I've had one and it's OK. I used to bag it up and it would rot down a bit and us it like a mulsh.

You could Hire a transit for a couple of hours and take it all to your local council recycling centre

  • My local council doesn't allow hire vehicles, anything over 3.5 tons or over 2m tall unfortunately image

I am all for it being taken away. Hire a man with a trailer to take it to the local dump. Anything else is too much work for too little reward.

Just a question, but why are you taking down hedges at this time of year, when it is the nesting season?

If you had done it in the Autumn/Winter you could have sold the logs.
  • I took the hedges down because I now have some free time to deal with the garden and have a baby on the way, I work shifts so this was the time that suited me to have this work done. My neighbour is advising me to burn it all in my garden...my first thoughts in this are no way! The other neighbours will complain and ash will go everywhere? I don't recall ever seeing someone burn this much garden waste!

Looks far too much to burn. I would phone the local council and ask their advice. There must be some way of getting it taken away to a tip.

I would go with a petrol shredder and an advert on gumtree/ free cycle or ebay for free wood for a stove.

I took down about 25 metres of conifer hedging for and elderly neighbour and got over 3 months of wood for free and loads of free chipping to mix with my grass cuttings for composting.   I used an Eliet Major shredder which took the waste without clogging up that often.  It took a few days but it was worth it
