Porlock pruning

my genista porlock is already over a metre and a half tall and has gotten very bushy. It has just finished flowering and was wondering if it ok to prune it lightly just so we can get around it!! It is in a big barrel planter in my south facing garden and has lots of what looks like seed pods on it. Will I kill it by lightly pruning?
