what to use as a mulch on my asparagus bed?

ive put in a 1 year old  crown asparagus bed at my allotment

The problem i have is that the manure i put in last winter is full of weeds are now trying to take over.I was thinking of using cut grass or woodchips as a mulch to keep the weeds down.

Can anyone let me know if this would be suitable ie it wouldnt add to much nitogen/ would be harmful to the asapagus crowns

i dont know how acidic grass cuttings are?

    Yoweeyahoo2 I wouldn't use grass but anything that's rotted down.That's the only thing about manure I think it wasn't rotted down enough.
