Plant Identification fo my neighbour!

My friends have lived in their house for 18 years and apparently this has appeared this year -what is it and what can you do with it?  Thanks in advance!

    It's Libertia grandiflora, it seems to be doing very nicely on its own

    It's rather spectacular isn't it. I'd be begging to cut myself a chunk from it image
