Onion leaf problem - black sticky deposit.

Hi,
i have discovered some of my onions have a sticky black deposit on some leaves but unerneath seems a small Caterpillar type of insect.Does anyone know what this is and does the usual multi insect spay work on these?

Many thanks. Found 2 of them near the onions but did not realise what they were.
I also found this beetle on one of the contaminated onions and thought it may be the problem. Perhaps you know what this is.
