Laburnam in a pot?

I am thinking of buying a Laburnam and putting against a wall in a large square pot.

I assume it will stunt the growth somewhat.

Does anyone have any advice on whether this will survive and also on pruning this.

The plant a local supplier has is 8' high.  If I cut the top out is it likely to spread more?

It'll survive and look OK in a pot for a while but ultimately it wants to become a fair sized tree, and in my opinion, they are best left to develop their natural, characteristic slightly weeping form. I would go with something smaller, or which is suitable for pruning/topiarising.

Trees in pots can really only be regarded as a temporary feature unless you are willing to root prune.....something carried out by bonsai growers and the good people at Versailles and Villandry to keep the potted orange trees in good shape. If you can regard your laburnum as a transient feature of your garden (but aren't most plants?) then give it a go.
