Ants nest in compost bin

I've opened my compost bin to find loads of ants - are they beneficial in the composting process?

They are part of life's rich pattern and will invade your compost bin because it is nice and cosy. They won't cause any harm.

As Edd says, you definitely need to add more water: if ants are present, then the compost is far too dry and so won't break down for a long time. Add a little water and then turn or mix it. Also keep an eye on the ratio of of greens to browns which should be approximately 50% of each by volume.

agree with above, ants are a sure sign your compost is too dry and not working properly
