Ornamental Grass or Weed

Hi Folks

I have noticed a large grass like plant in my garden that I don't remember planting.  It is amongst an agapanthus and a perennial pea.

The grass is about 3-4ft tall.

Thanks for any help.

One of those has just come up in my garden too. I quite like it but it's in an odd place so I think it must be self seeded from somewhere. I'll be interested to hear what other people think it is.

Do you feed the birds,? It could be wheat or barley. I occasionally get them in my garden, easily pulled out if you need to. I'd wait and see what your plant does just watch out incase it has runners like couch grass.

Thats what I'm worried about Bilje, I do feed the birds but no where near that spot.

Neither of those to will run, they're annuals

Nut, they are growing about 6inches apart at the foot of a large ivy covered tree stump.  The birds do roost in there, wonder if seed has been dropped by them.

My NE garden had gold finches visiting since mid winter so I fed them niger seed then ended up with a mat of seedlings in the gravel....I weeded them out but wish I'd left one or two to see what the developed into.

Thanks everyone, I think I'm going to leave them alone for now. It's a good talking point.
