Should I admit that I just buy the cheapest peat free compost? I've used New Horizon, and Aldi, and to be honest the Aldi stuff seems very good. For pak choi and beetroot/chard I plant the seeds 1cm deep. No idea about lettuce.
By the way, chard and beetroot are the same species. I have some beetroot, with lovely large leaves in pristine condition. Hopefully when the roots have swelled, I can eat the leaves too. Last year the leaves were a bit tatty, probably due to sparrows.
Ah yes, I think no-one has warned you to net the leaves. Cabbage will be eaten by caterpillars, weevils, flea beetles etc. Fine netting is essential. Incidentally, one more advantage of using modules is that you raise the young plant in a protected invironment and plant out once it is big enough to survive the odd peck, and nibble!
Nematodes sort the slugs. Expensive, but worth it at the start of the growing season.
Pigeons ....the odd peck!!!! You don't know Pompey pigeons......I think they all have been for a run ashore and end up starving, someone should buy them a kebab or two.
I haven't seen any creepy crawlies and I have looked. Thankfully everything is WELL netted now and I hope the brassicas will recover.
