Leggy tomatoes

I've been waiting for a new greenhouse which has sadly been delayed. In the meantime my tomato plants which I have indoors against patio windows have got incredibly leggy and in trying to repot some have broken. I am now wondering wether these will grow again & still produce fruit & also if the ones that have got really leggy could be cut shorter & still be ok?

I wouldn't trim them. Tie them in to short canes for support and put them outside during the day so that they can bulk out a bit. Bring them in at night until they are strong enough to stay outside or, hopefully, go into your new greenhouse.

The plants that have broken off should produce side shoots and can grow from one of those.

Put them outside and grow in bags instead Gill, otherwise they'll suffer.

  • Ok thank you both- will do

Take off the bottom leaves and lay them down when you plant them, so just the top few sets are above ground (they'll grow up, so don't worry about planting them sideways).  They'll send roots out of the buried stem, and you won't have leggy plants anymore.. Just normal height plants with great root systems.  The broken ones should send out a sucker that can become the new lead stem, so not all is lost.
