You will all be wishing that I hadn't worked out how to post pics soon!!

This was taken last June and will be out in bloom again soon,I have a feeling that it is classed as a weed- but we think it pretty (and remains in full flower for ages) and will not be digging it up, thanks

Many thanks kleipieper and nutcutlet, I've just done a 'google' and I too can't spot the difference between the two.

The difference is that the punctata lacks a red margin on its calyx and it's inflorescence tends to be denser...that means it's bushier image

Very versatile - it grows in bog conditions and I've had it live for years just dug up and sitting on concrete. Not recommending this of course, but these things seem to happen!

But like Jo, I wish the plant breeders would get to work and come up with a pretty soft yellow that would go with soft violety blues, or a cream even. This bright yellow is cheery and good with green, white and orange but only works with a dark blue and I don't have so many of those.

Don't forget it can be a rampant spreader.

There is a white version called lysmachia clethroides alba or gooseneck because of the shape of the flower heads.   I love this one.   Not keen on the yellow one as it's a bit brash so I hide that away in difficult corners as ground cover.
