Rasberries.

My Glen Ample raspberry canes are full of flowers, but the canes are about 6' tall and the fruit is going to be on the topmost part.  Should I have pruned it in early spring by taking the top say 1' - 2' off making the canes sprout more from lower down?.

Your comments please.

Thanks.

No brockley, leave them and prune after fruiting in mid to late Autumn taking out the fruited canes to ground level.

Thanks Dave,  Its just that the canes seem to be taller than last year. I have pruned them as you say, taking out the fruited canes.

So I will leave well alone.

I think Dave is talking about the normal form of pruning.

brockley: is the fruit at the top a problem e.g. too high to pick?

My summer canes, Glen Coe, were supposed to grow to 2m, but grow to 4m instead, and they have broken the wires and the poles. In this case I think they should have been pruned to 2m tall. I do wish sellers - Marshalls I think in this case - would give accurate size information. Or maybe they love my heavy clay soil?

How can any seller, garden centre or plant expert give accurate size information when every gardener has different soil, different feeding and watering regimes, different amounts of shade or sun and different plants growing nearby?

Chilli growers can quite happily give an indication of the final size, so can blackcurrant bush sellers. So why not raspberry canes? And if they can't, why do they?
